Person First, Trauma Informed, Full Spectrum Doula Services

Julia Carmen

I am a Los Angeles-based, certified full-spectrum doula. I am named after my grandmother, Julia, who migrated from Honduras in 1985 and my mother, Carmen. I carry their lessons and lineage with me, providing culturally-informed, person first care to clients throughout the LA area. My work is grounded in lived experience alongside professional training, enabling me to bring a grounded, informed, and deeply supportive presence to every stage of every one of my client’s pregnancy journeys.

I am a mother of five and a grandmother of eighteen. I have been present for the births of nine of my grandchildren. I am a “mother of mothers” and also a mother of two angels. I understand the complexity and beauty of growing a family, and I recognize the level of care, advocacy, and unwavering support pregnancy requires.

I received my doula certification through the Birthworkers of Color Collective and have completed additional training in Spinning Babies®, Ayurvedic Postpartum Practitioner Training, perinatal mental health, herbalism, abortion support including trans-affirming abortion support, and advocacy for birth workers. I am a certified Perinatal Patient Advocate through the Perinatal Patient Advocacy Center and I received my Postpartum Mental Health Certification from Postpartum University. I remain actively involved in reproductive justice and work with a community-based organization that provides prenatal services and supplies to unhoused women.

I serve both Medi-Cal and cash paying clients because access to care should never be determined by income. I am comfortable in high-stakes, complex situations and bring a calm, steady presence into moments that can often feel chaotic or overwhelming. I listen to every detail and desire my clients have, provide evidence-based information, advocate throughout every stage, and proudly protect their “birth bubble” during labor and postpartum. I believe pregnancy is a fierce, powerful process that should be facilitated with respect, trust and genuine care. I bring a steady, judgement-free presence to birth and postpartum care, blending practical knowledge with a deep respect for each person's individual path. I believe that birth is not solely a medical event but a threshold which every woman deserves to cross with support, safety, dignity and compassion.

Reviews

  • "Working with Julia truly changed the course of my life. When I first met her, I was 24 weeks pregnant, unhoused, and planning to terminate my pregnancy. I felt overwhelmed, alone, and unsure of what to do next. From the very beginning, Julia met me with nothing but compassion, patience, and zero judgment. That alone meant everything to me. As I began to reconsider my decision, Julia stood by me every step of the way. She didn’t just offer emotional support—she showed up for me in real, tangible ways. She went out into the community with me, helped me navigate resources, picked me up and dropped me off when I had nowhere to turn, and never once made me feel like I was a burden. Because of her dedication and persistence, I was able to get into a hotel for a few weeks and eventually secure placement in a maternity home for unhoused women. That stability changed everything for me. She was also by my side during birth—when my blood pressure kept rising and I was being led toward a potential cesarean delivery, she supported me through it, and together we were able to avoid that outcome. I went on to have a beautiful vaginal birth and a healthy baby boy. Today, I’m surrounded by a village that is helping me get back on my feet. I truly don’t believe I would be here without Julia’s support. She believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. Julia doesn’t just do this work—she lives it. She leads with heart, with compassion, and with a level of care that is rare to find. I am forever grateful for her and everything she’s done for me and my baby."

  • "First time pregnancy/new mom so I know finding a doula could be stressful and with that being said, I was nervous to find a doula that would exceed my expectations the day my delivery arrived but Julia definitely made my labor experience better than I was even hoping for. With really trying to figure out and narrowing down my needs/wants, she did a wonderful job when the day arrived. Good advocation, followed through my birth plan as much as possible, kept me present through contracting/labor, and guided my husband to help me. Throughout my pregnancy she checked in with me and gave me extremely helpful guides for my health. Overall, she made me feel comfortable and at ease from the start. If I plan to have more babies, I’m hoping she’s my doula again."

"As first time parents Julia was an amazing doula. She was with us during pregnancy, during the birth, as well as a final postpartum session. We could not imagine our daughter's birth without Julia. During early labor, Julia was responsive and communicated with us throughout this portion of the birth. Once we were admitted to the hospital Julia arrived shortly after and was with us for the entirety of labor. Her presence was calming and she helped to honor our birth plan providing both physical and emotional support. We would recommend Julia as a doula for any expecting parents!"
